“Thank you First Place 4 Health for saving my life and the life of my family.” I am so blessed that First Place 4 Health entered into my life. It has truly changed me forever. Here is where my journey began. Before going on vacation last year, I set through the presentation on the four-sided person. I was reminded by my leader that I was the last person to sign up that day. Although I was at the very end of my overweight rope, I had tried everything else and it didn’t work, so what did I have to lose, but weight?  So I gave the First Place 4 Health Program a shot, with plenty of skepticism. My weight problem started at around age seven and by the age of ten, I was 120 lbs.  From that point on, I continued to gain weight by leaps and bounds, and when

This morning I woke up with a melody in my heart: “This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long . . .” Both my husband and I have had major health problems over the years. But in every problem, we can see God’s blessing, healing and faithfulness. My husband has had heart problems for years, resulting in bypasses, stints, atrial fibrillation and a pacemaker. He also had colon cancer and back surgeries. We’ve been hospitalized so many times that we have the hospital food menu memorized. God used Joel’s heart problems to get us into cardio rehab, which includes an exercise program we can do together. I had never been on a treadmill previous to that. My health problems stem from allergies, a brain tumor that left me deaf in my  right ear and balance problems. I have fallen many times, resulting in

All of my childhood, I was “Patty.”  Well we all know what that rhymes with – “fatty.” Psychologists tell us that children become what is spoken to them and over them. I grew to live up to the wretched nickname, “Fatty Patty.” When I was an early teen, my stepdad would call me, “PJ” because my legal first name is “Patrice” and my last name was “Johnle.” Years later, after God had worked His miraculous power in my life, I changed my name to PJ and even changed it on my notary seal! I was so happy to SHED that horrid nickname I had been tagged with as a child. As I grew up, my weight vacillated and like many others, I went from diet plan to diet plan and diet pill to diet pill, eating incredible volumes of cabbage soup or hardboiled eggs and hot dogs, as well as

Recently one member of our group asked me a question that really made me think, so I wrote this in response. How does studying forgiveness, or even doing this Bible study help me lose weight? Honestly, I don’t know how it works but I know it does work, because it worked for me. My dysfunctional home life caused me to use food for comfort. At 12 years old, I weighed over 200# and this was the beginning of my dieting. My diet mentality encapsulated my life for the next 30 years. I learned points and calorie counting. I measured and prepared food. I worked out HARD. I called a friend every night for over 3 years to keep me accountable. I knew nutritional values like the back of my hand. It makes total sense to solve a physical problem (obesity) with a physical answer (portion control, exercise, ect) that I

I began walking for exercise. In the beginning, I had a hard time just walking up stairs without losing my breath. My main stumbling block in life has always been my excess weight. I had started a diet many times in the past, and I did lose weight. But within a short time, I would gain all of the weight back, plus more. All of that yo-yo dieting took a toll on my health. I had high blood pressure, a hiatal hernia, sleep apnea and high cholesterol. I was taking five prescription medications a day. So, at the age of 50, in January 2006, I decided to go to a Bible study weight-loss class at my church. This was my introduction to First Place 4 Health. I soon found that it was not just a diet plan, but also a Live It plan. We put Christ first in our lives,

Now, 24.2 pounds lighter after my first 12-week session in FP4H, I have so much more energy and feel spiritually, emotionally, and mentally stronger than I have ever been. As pastor of Southeast Baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas, I have slowly, over the years, inched my way up in pounds. The potluck dinners, the low activity level, and the stresses of the ministry have all contributed to my unhealthy state. I have tried all my life to lose the weight and keep it off. For better health reasons, I decided to join FP4H to see if it would work for me. As I began my new lifestyle to mold myself into a better emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical person, I was surprised to see the weight begin to come off. It was hard to believe that I could go through each day without being hungry and yet see the

My expectation when I started First Place 4 Health was to lose weight, and getting closer to God was the bonus. I was a new Christian (two years old) when I received a catalog in the mail with an article about First Place 4 Health. I thought it was simply a weight-loss program, but if it was from God, then it couldn’t be bad. This time I had God helping me to lose weight. There were no groups in my area at that time, so I thought that if I wanted First Place 4 Health in my church, I would have to start a group. I looked online to get more information and really liked the program. As more time went by, I felt eager to get started and was looking forward to helping others, plus finally losing weight myself. I started First Place 4 Health in January 2008. At

The truth is– we all know how to lose weight and I was no different. I just never had found the real motivation to get it off and keep it off until my experience with FP4H!  I have had a strong family history of heart disease, which really concerned me, but not enough to make any real and lasting changes in the past. My father had a massive heart attack at the age of 58, which was a frightening experience and a slight wake-up call for me. The heart attack robbed my dad of any quality of life for the rest of his years; it did not kill his body, but it for sure killed his spirit for living. In June 2008, I was 56 years old, 5’6” and weighed 218 pounds. I had been following in my dad’s footsteps, the pattern that had been set before me of an unhealthy

I have lost 84 pounds and my health has improved drastically. I no longer have to take insulin or any form of diabetes medicine. My “before” picture was made on November 8, 2006, the day I received the Mississippi School Counselor of the Year award. This should have been one of the happiest days of my life; unfortunately, it was not. Numerous health issues made it almost impossible to even attend the ceremony. Later, I had several surgeries, and the doctor diagnosed me with diabetes. I was placed on four insulin shots a day. I was at my heaviest – 250 pounds. I knew I had to do something or I was going to die. I read a book by Carole Lewis about First Place and decided to try the program. With limited biblical knowledge, I felt hesitant to lead a group. Initially, I did part of the steps of First Place on my own. Then the

It’s a good day……..You Are A Precious G.E.M.  (God’s Extreme Makeover) I’m not a big fan of using acronyms, but this one, “Precious G.E.M.”, just feels good. When I was young, it was instilled in me that what happened in our home stayed there.  So I became what I thought was a very private person, when in reality, I was just afraid.  God has promised me that if I share the good things, which he has done for me, with anyone who has the ears to hear, that all the bad things could be expressed in a general way. We have all had some loss, pain, fear, disappointment and hurt, which turns into anger, depression, guilt, and the list goes on!!!  So I will fast forward in my story. I was a mess, but realized after much love from my husband, Bret, of over twenty years, my son, Garret, and Ted and Jo Stone,
