A Healthy Heart is a Happy Heart

A Healthy Heart is a Happy Heart

Don’t you love it when science and medicine catches up with the Bible? First Place 4 Health has said for years that there is a connection between a healthy body and a healthy spirit. Now there is clinical proof. The Bible tells us that people who give thanks and praise to God stay healthy and young!  Psalm 103: 1-5 from the New International Version says: Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.  Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.  I have meditated on this Psalm all month. What sparked my interest is the phrase from verse two, Praise the Lord, oh my soul, and forget not all his benefits, and the connection

Food Is Not the Enemy

Food Is Not the Enemy

A young woman asked me to pray that God would help her find a new Bible study group. She quit her current group because of the food they served. She was working hard trying to lose weight and was annoyed because their events seemed to be centered on food. She shared her weight loss goals with the group and asked them not to serve the food. But they refused. They said, “If you don’t want the food, don’t eat the food…or, just eat a little.”  Frustrated by their lack of consideration and worried about losing the progress she had made, she decided to find another Bible study group less “obsessed” with food. I questioned, “Is food really the problem? Do they gather to talk about, study and worship the food? Do they focus solely on the food?” She responded, “Well, no. We study the Bible. The food is served at

Week of Prayer

Week of Prayer

There are many things that are essential to arriving at true peace of mind and one of the most important is faith, which cannot be acquired without prayer.  John Wooden “Oh ye of little faith!”(Matthew 16:8) I feel like I hear the Lord chuckle that over me every day. It’s been over eighteen months since I became the national director of First Place 4 Health, and there have been days I was tempted to worry. I can hear my mother-in-law (Lou Heath) say, “Why pray when you can worry?”  Looking back over the year at what has been accomplished, I am convinced that the success can be attributed to our first Week of Prayer last September. We are again asking that you join us in six days of focused prayer for this ministry. Matthew 18:19 says, Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything

Wardrobe Must-Haves

Wardrobe Must-Haves

It’s been awhile since I had to buy “back to school” clothes. But something just clicks in me this time of year to check out the weekly mail advertisements for backpacks and athletic shoes. School starts in a few weeks and many of you will be starting back, maybe not to school, but back to your focused work for the kingdom. I’m still going to invest in a fall wardrobe, but of a different nature.  The Bible tells us in Ephesians 6:11-17 that the well-dressed person has some basic wardrobe items that are “must-haves”. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.  Therefore put on the full armor of

Back on Track

Back on Track

You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth?  That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you.  Galatians 5:7-8  Are you hearing yourself saying “I need to get back on track?” It might be that your summer has been so much fun that routines and schedules are the last thing on your mind.  Or it could be that your summer has been so stressful that you’ve gotten off track. No matter what these months have looked like for you and me, we are feeling the need to get back on track.  How do we get back on track? I think there are three things we all must do: Accept Where You Are This sounds simple, but it is a pre-requisite to beginning again. Pat Lewislikes to say, “Wherever you go, there you are.” Well, here you

Why YOU need to be in Houston in July

Why YOU need to be in Houston in July

I’ve purchased my ticket, I’ve worked on my talks and I am praying for Summit 2015 daily. The one thing that will make it complete is when you register to come. You need to be there!  I understand about finances and I understand about time off; however, so much is at stake. God is using First Place 4 Health to make His church healthy for such a time as this. I don’t want you to miss out on a single thing the Lord has for you this year. You will miss: The race – Yes, an actual walk or run on Saturday morning that we like to call The Half.  It is half of a 3K and we’ll have awards!  It’s on the schedule early in the day before it gets too hot.  It’s an option, but everyone will be able to participate.  Whether you walk, run, jog or slog, you

Five Reasons to Have a FP4H Summer Session

Five Reasons to Have a FP4H Summer Session

My spring session of FP4H only has two more weeks, and I have to tell you I am a little panicky. I have a feeling that a few in my group will want to want to break for summer.  Not me—I need it all! I am going to make my case next week in class as to why I think we should continue. I have narrowed it down to five reasons: No. 1:  We all need accountability. I have finally gotten to the place in my walk with the Lord that I do not have to be weighed by someone every week. I am not at the place, however, where I do not need someone praying for me every week. The prayer support in my FP4H group is deeper and more consistent than any I have ever experienced. We don’t have a large class, but we are wholeheartedly committed to

One Wise Choice at a Time…Before It’s Too Late

One Wise Choice at a Time…Before It’s Too Late

Celebrating Mother’s Day was always a dilemma for me. What do you give a mom who has just about everything? The one thing I truly wanted to give my mom, I could not—the gift of good health. My mother was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in the summer of 2009.  She had been fairly active most of her life. She was a member of a mall walker’s club; she worked hard in her garden and there were some days I could not keep up with her energy. She started slowing down little by little, and in the second year after my father’s death she finally gave up her healthy lifestyle.  By the time she was diagnosed with the lung cancer, she had become very inactive.  As we met with the doctor, I asked him what we could do to beat this cancer.  Unfortunately, neither chemotherapy nor radiation would have a positive effect on

My Hope for You

My Hope for You

Spring is awesome on Edisto Island. I woke up this morning to the birds outside my window shouting “Get up!” “Spring is here!”  And that means Easter. The memories come flooding back to Easters when I was growing up. Imagine a crazy, strong, wacky family doing life without church. I cannot recall even one Easter going to church as a family. We colored eggs, ate the ears off chocolate bunnies, and marshmallow peeps. There was one Easter Sunday I remember that was different. I knew in my heart there was something very significant about Easter. I was about eight years old when I got up early and went outside by myself. It was still dark. I felt compelled to tell God thank you for Easter in some way, even though I did not really understand what it all meant. I had a small red New Testament with Psalms that had

Signing On for Another 20 Years

Signing On for Another 20 Years

This year marks my 20th anniversary with First Place 4 Health. I was a young mom with four children and just turning 40 (Yes, I consider that still young!), when I discovered First Place. I started a group with seven women. Every one of us lost weight, but what we found was so much more. I really got spiritually organized for the first time ever, and learned to consistently have a quiet time that has changed my life. I am now turning 60, and I still choose First Place 4 Health. I have seen dozens of wellness programs and weight-loss programs come and go, but FP4H remains constant. As I am leading my class here on Edisto, I am reminded why I love this program. First, it cares for the whole person. We meet on Tuesdays at 11:00 a.m. and even though my class is small this session, I am
