Strength Training – Today is Your Day!

There are so many things about Jesus that I absolutely love! His steadfast love makes me strong, His new mercies every morning give me the chance to begin again, and His promise to be with me in all things brings me the power to conquer what I can’t defeat alone.  As a fitness professional, I believe Jesus is the answer to living a healthy physical life. Strength training is a big part of that life.  The Physical Activity Guidelines for Adults states, “Adults should do muscle-strengthening activities of moderate or greater intensity that involve all major muscle groups on two or more days a week.”  If you haven’t begun strength training, then today is your day! Some easy tips to remember as you get started: Begin every exercise time with core exercises for stability. Work your bigger muscle groups first, then move onto smaller ones. Divide your routine into two days

Strength Through Community – Your New Best Friend

Strength Through Community - Your New Best Friend

I finish out my fifties in twelve months. Since my grandparents and great-grandparents lived into their late nineties, my goal for the long haul is to remain strong. I realize if I’m not building muscle strength, I’m losing it. I teach a Body & Soul Strength and Flexibility class at my church two days a week. Why? Because I need it. Plus, when I’m working out with others, I’ll show up. In 2010, when I reached my healthy goal, it was just in time for the hormone roller coaster, menopause.  There is a reason the calorie range charts reduce by 200 calories per day for women when they reach age 51 and men age 61.  As our hormones change (men included), our bodies age, and expend less energy.  If we don’t decrease our food intake, increase our activity level, and build muscle mass, you guessed it, we gain weight.  Plus,

Success Story – Christopher Lawson

Success Story - Christopher Lawson

Picture on the left, over 500 lbs.! I have always had a misinterpreted relationship with obesity, being overweight, and the connection to food and mood.  Of course, that led to depleted self-esteem and positivity issues throughout life. Fast forward to 2012.  I call this my “newbie year.” My youngest was born, and this is the year that my maximum weight was reached. In time for a physical at doctor’s office, I had consciously worked on losing; losing 40 pounds of well over 500 pounds, feeling accomplished.  The doctor walks in the room and acknowledges the loss, but delivers the impact blow, “If you want to see your kids all graduate, you need to step on the accelerator!” Accepting the challenge. I started home exercise programs, bought the shakes, joined the various groups, even bought what claimed to be the “magic pill” for success in weight loss and transformation. Some of

Success Story – Monique Johnson

Success Story - Monique Johnson

I was a new Christian (two years old) when I received a catalog in the mail with an article about First Place 4 Health. I thought it was simply a weight-loss program, but if it was from God, then it couldn’t be bad. This time I had God helping me to lose weight. There were no groups in my area at that time, so I thought that if I wanted First Place 4 Health in my church, I would have to start a group. I looked online to get more information and really liked the program. As more time went by, I felt eager to get started and was looking forward to helping others, plus finally losing weight myself. I started First Place 4 Health in January 2008. At that time, I weighed in at 183, my highest weight, which consisted of pounds gained after being on so many different

My Success Story Wellness Week

My Success Story Wellness Week

My story really isn’t about me it’s about God’s transformation in my life through the First Place for Health program. When people see me, they automatically think I have been in shape and exercised all my life, but that is so far from the truth. The truth is that I and loved to eat and was a couch potato. I knew every number on the fast food menus and had such a sweet tooth dessert was part of each meal. I was so out of shape and overweight that my arms used to flap every time I moved them. My eating and non-exercise habits lead me to years of yo-yo dieting. I tried so many diets: the high carb diet, weight watcher, and the low carb diet. All these diets worked I would lose 20lbs and but then I would go back to my old eating habits and gain it

Getting Healthy Is Not For the Faint of Heart

Getting Healthy Is Not For the Faint of Heart

I can’t memorize verses. I can’t track my food this way. I don’t have time to do the study every day. I am tired and busy, so I cannot make a meeting every week. I did not want others to know my weight, so I can’t weigh-in in front of people. I have had too many surgeries, so I couldn’t exercise; I have physical limitations. I worked hard all day; I deserve to eat or to take a break. I have a lot of food allergies and I felt deprived of all the things I could not eat, so I ate what I could (and more of it). These are some of the reasons I have heard why FP4H does not work. There is just too much work involved. It’s true, getting healthy will take some major effort on your part. But we are without excuse really. The Bible tells
