This morning I woke up with a melody in my heart: “This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long . . .” Both my husband and I have had major health problems over the years. But in every problem, we can see God’s blessing, healing and faithfulness.

My husband has had heart problems for years, resulting in bypasses, stints, atrial fibrillation and a pacemaker. He also had colon cancer and back surgeries. We’ve been hospitalized so many times that we have the hospital food menu memorized. God used Joel’s heart problems to get us into cardio rehab, which includes an exercise program we can do together. I had never been on a treadmill previous to that. My health problems stem from allergies, a brain tumor that left me deaf in my  right ear and balance problems. I have fallen many times, resulting in various injuries. I also had to have my thyroid irradiated. That’s when I began gaining a lot of weight, and I didn’t realize the toll the weight was having on me. One of my most humbling moments came when I had to pay for two seats on a helicopter ride.  Through it all, Jesus became closer and dearer to me, showing His grace and mercy and giving both Joel and me hope for the future. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13). God has blessed my husband and me through our many trials and has always shown His faithful love to us.

I joined First Place 4 Health a year and a half ago and didn’t really think I would lose weight. It wasn’t all easy. When I hit my first plateau, the point where I usually give up, the group members reminded me to take one day, one choice at a time, trust God for the strength to make good choices and look to God for encouragement instead of using food for comfort. Wonderful ladies! As of now, I have lost around 150 pounds and 21 inches from my waist. My cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure have dropped dramatically to normal. My BMI was 49.32 and is now 32.19.

God has given me a whole new life and the energy to enjoy it to the fullest. I can’t believe how well I can get around. I helped my husband with gardening this  year for the first time in 20 years. I can even paint my toenails.  This September, my husband and I went to my 50th high school reunion on a Mexican cruise. I wouldn’t have wanted to be seen a year and a half ago. While on the cruise, I went parasailing and swimming with dolphins. What fun!

Our grown sons are happy that I have lost weight. I didn’t realize they were so worried about my health. My husband calls me his “incredible shrinking wife.” Before, I was always so big that I hated shopping for myself. Now I love to shop for clothes!  God works everything together for good. We are both eating healthy foods; we are stronger and enjoy exercising regularly. We love this new life that God has given us. “Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this” (Psalm 37:4-5).
