Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him. John 14:21
The greatest thrill of my life is when God shows Himself to me. I “see” God with the eyes of my soul—that is, I sense His presence when I listen to His commands and obey them.
How well I remember the distress I experienced during a time when I let a negative frame of mind take over, which resulted in my wanting to see a coworker lose her job.
The woman I was fretting over wasn’t under my supervision or even in my department, but I had influence in the department where she worked. One morning, as I was running, I thought about what I was going to say to this woman’s supervisor. Suddenly, a clear message came into my mind. I knew God was speaking: “Carole, do you know that I love her as much as I love you?”
I was so astounded that I argued with God for almost a mile! But in the end I knew what I had to do.
When I got to the office, I immediately went down the hall to the restroom. I knew I would find this woman there. She was always at least 20 minutes late; and on top of that, the restroom, where she put on her makeup, was always her first stop. When I walked in, she turned from the mirror, and I said, “I need you to forgive me if I’ve hurt you in any way.”
Her eyes filled with tears. “Oh, Carole, I thought you hated me.”
From that day on, we had a new and different relationship—one that honored Christ. By allowing God to work in her life and by my not taking matters into my own hands, I was able to see the worth of every individual in His eyes.
Father, I want to obey You today. Help me to be as loving and forgiving today as You have been to me. My prayer for today is that You would show Yourself to me.
Journal: Confess to God one specific area in which you are refusing to obey. Ask Him to help you obey His commands.
